Gifts for Guns

Gifts for Guns

By Miranda Grossman

Local police and medical professionals hope that a new gun buyback program will help reduce the number of accidental injuries.

This is the second year of the "Gift for Guns" program in which people return their guns for a gift card to the Eastfield Mall. All returns are anonymous. It will take place this Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the East Longmeadow, Longmeadow, West Springfield and Wilbraham police departments. As well as the Joseph Budd Youth Assessment Center on Liberty Street.

While people returning their guns will get a gift card, officials say the reward is larger than money. "What we saw last year were people who were really relieved. They had the gun in the house and didn't know how to secure it and dispose of it," said Molly Gray, of Baystate Children's Hospital.

Guns that are brought to the buyback must be unloaded and wrapped in a bag.
