Westfield Residents Voice Concerns Over Noise

By Jennifer Thome

With the F-15's based at Barnes Air National Guard Base in Westfield many residents are worried about the noise the fighter jets are making.
There is a program to help sound proof their homes, but it does not cover everyone whose windows are rattling.

Richard Westbrook, homeowner near Barnes, says, "When it's loud, I can't hear nobody on the phone, can't hear nobody, my windows rattle because they're old."

Richard Westbrook is talking about the noise the F-15's make when they take off from Barnes Air National Guard Base in Westfield and fly over his home of nearly 5 years.

Westbrook says, "They are louder than the A-10's, the ones before were not so bad."

But he says the F-15's are. But he's not qualified for money to make his home soundproof. He lives outside the decibels lines. The lines are based off of the runway where the F-15's take off and land 90 percent of the time. As it stands now, all the homes outside the lines will not get help to sound proof their homes even though residents say it's loud.

Shirley Prescott, Westfield homeowner says, "Right now I don't have my windows open and I can hear it and in the summer it's going to be a louder situation."

Currently there are four flights a day Tuesday through Friday but come summer that's going to increase to 16, 8 in the morning and 8 in the afternoon. Residents say they're concerned that the increase noise will affect their families.

Ray St. Hilaire, lived in his home for 30 years, says, "It's very loud. Enough, that if my daughter is taking a nap, I have a three year old, it will wake her."

More than 300 people came Tuesday night to a meeting to get answers. They had the opportunity to look at maps, hear what a panel of experts had to say about the studies completed and ask questions.

Westbrook says, "I would like to see them do right by the community. If they want they can sit by my house and see the planes come over."

For the homes that are covered in the program on average they get about $40,000 worth of upgrades. And officials say their house value does not change.
