Man Found With Arsenal Released on Bail

By Lesley Tanner

A Springfield man arrested over the weekend after police found an arsenal of weapons in his home is released on $2,500 dollars bail. At a hearing his daughter described an argument that lead police to dozens of guns.

"He picked up a gun, picked up a bullet, put it in the chamber, loaded it, turned around, put it on his finger, spun it around at me and said, 'You'll leave now won't you?'" says the suspect's daughter Michelle Plouff.

This is the confrontation that brought police to Gerald Plouff's home on Randall Place. The argument allegedly started Saturday morning when Plouff's wife called her daughter, concerned about his plan to sell his gun collection.

"I started saying to myself, 'I don't know if this is safe,'" says Gloria Plouff.

Inside the home police found an arsenal of weapons including more than 20 guns and boxes of ammunition. Both his wife and daughter testified that he had never threatened them with the guns before, and Plouff's attorney says it was his daughter who provoked this threat.

"The gun's in open view, your father is full of rage, appearing to be crazy. Your father asks you to leave the house, and you say, 'Make me?'" asked Defense Attorney Terrence Dunphy.

Plouff's family says he has a history of mental illness, including vivid flashbacks to his time serving in Vietnam. They say his erratic behavior has gotten worse over the past few weeks and when asked if there was anyway she would feel safe if he was released his daughter said no.

"I know what he does when you cross him," says Michelle. "And unfortunately at this point I have crossed him."

The judge decided to allow Plouff's release, but with several conditions. Among them he must stay away from his daughter and wife, who both now have restraining orders against him. He is not allowed to possess any firearms or weapons and he must check in with probation twice a week.
