Residents Petition to Reopen a Turners Falls Bridge

A dilapidated building in Turners Falls has been become more than just an eyesore. It also prevents residents from using one of only two bridges into the neighborhood.

"Its been several years and the bridge still hasn't been opened up to us," said Charlotte Mierzwa, a Turners Falls resident.

After two years of one-way in and one-way out of the neighborhood known as the patch in Turners Falls, residents are frustrated. Charlotte Mierzwa has lived here for eight years, and the only way to get home is the Eleventh Street bridge.

"Its frustrating, its like we are forgotten," adds Mierzwa.

The Sixth Street Bridge was the alternative, but access to it has been closed for two years. That is because of the collapsing and deteriorating Railroad Salvage building, an old department store that's become treacherous for people to drive by.

"The Railroad Salvage building has been in a state of deterioration for a couple years, it got to the point where it became dangerous and the town had to close the road," said Town Administrator Frank Abbondanzio.

About 50 neighbors signed a petition asking the town to reopen the bridge and force the owner of Railroad Salvage to demolish the building. The town is taking the owner, who lives in Florida, to housing court. Officials say the petition may help give them a push in making their case to the courts. The town and the owner will be in court next week.
