Charity Homes Built In Record Time

By Matt DeLucia

Imagine having your house built in just eight weeks, especially if you were desperate for one. An East Longmeadow company hopes to do just that.

Call it a labor of love, and one that does not know the meaning of exhaustion. That is because a local team of builders plans to build a home for a struggling family in record time - in just eight weeks.

The team from the East Longmeadow-based Lenox Manufacturing started only a few days ago, and already the house is shaping up. All of the walls are in place, and in about seven weeks from now, the Nieves family from Springfield will be able to move in to their new home.

The whole effort is part of the Greater Springfield Habitat for Humanity, and with each board that goes up and each nail that is hammered in, Janet Nieves cannot believe the outpouring of support for her and her three young kids.

"It's amazing. Yesterday there were no walls up, and today they're all up," Nieves said. "And my kids, they can't participate, but we drive by every day and they see the house being built, and they're very excited as well," she added.

Their new home on Chester Street will be among six other neighboring homes built by Habitat, including one still under construction just next door. Another interesting aspect is that all of the tools, materials, and labor for the project are volunteered.

"When you build a house with Habitat, you're putting love, and passion, and spirit into that house," said Jennifer Schimmel, Executive Director of the Greater Springfield Habitat for Humanity.

And without that ambition, Nieves, and others like her would not have a place to call home.

"It's nice people doing something for someone else, and nothing in return. They're just nice people," she said.
