Pet Store Reopens After Being Shut Down

Last month the state shut down The Puppy Place in West Springfield and a sister store in North Attleboro. On Tuesday The Puppy Place reopened, but can't sell any dogs right now.

The Puppy Place in West Springfield reopened it's doors Tuesday. The store was told to stop selling pets on March 20th after the Department of Agricultural Resources found the conditions inside unsuitable.

Assistant Commissioner Scott Soars says, "Overcrowding of animals, animals that had loose stool, they were tested. Giardia was noticed from tests and there were isolation issues that were quarantine issues that were not being abide by."

The Puppy Place will be given the opportunity to correct those problems, unlike the store in North Attleboro, "The Dog House" which has been permanently shut down.

Soars says, "Both had issues, The Dog House in North Attleboro had issues that dated back to 2005 and most recently The Puppy Place in West Springfield did have, on record, problems going back to November of '07."

Even though The Puppy Place has reopened, it can't sell any dogs.

Soars says, "They did not have a license as of yesterday {Tuesday} and we are in the process of developing that license right now as a result of inspections that we did last night."

The Department of Agricultural Resources says after The Puppy Place is issued a permit to sell dogs again, the state will be keeping a close eye on the store.

Soars says, "We will be inspecting them we have a court order that really speaks to the kind of conditions which they have to keep the animals in the facility."

Once The Puppy Place receives their permit they will be allowed to sell animals. The Dog Douse in North Attleboro has been shut down and will not be allowed to reopen.

If you want a puppy, buy from a reputable local breeder or adopt from a rescue. Save money, heartbreak, and get better health that your dog deserves!

I bought a puppy from the puppy store in west springfield on a sunday. Took her to the vet on tuesday-Giardia. Off to the vet again on thursday-Kennel Cough. Puppy was sooo tiny she wasn't able to eat or keep meds down. Call my vet on Saturday due to vomiting and the vet said to RUSH her to the Boston Road Animal Hospital. She tested positive for PARVOVIRUS! I've had this poor puppy for less than a week and she needs $4700.00 worth of care to try and get her on the right track.
