Student Drivers Learn How To Share Road With Big Rigs

By Liz Tufts

When it comes to getting behind the wheel for the first time, many student drivers share one common fear.

"Probably driving on the highway with all the trucks, " says 16-year-old Adrianna Suarez.

"The highway is really a big one for me because you are going so fast and you hear about all these things on the news," says 16-year-old Natalie Couture.

But students at Falls Driving School in South Hadley got some important information any driver would want to know. They sat in the drivers seat of a tractor trailer and learned first hand the blind spots big rig drivers face everyday.

"Students get in the truck to look and see what we don't see. It gives them a better perspective what they see and hopefully save lives, " says John Moore of the United Tractor Trailer School.

Drivers from the United Tractor Trailer School in Chicopee lended their truck and they placed two cars beside the big rig, and one behind it. Students were then asked if they could see the car's through the big rig mirrors.

"You don't see the blind spots like they do, and get to know their point of view," says Suarez.

It's information students can't learn in the classroom, and down the road will help them stay alive.

"I can stand in front of them all day and show them pictures, but now they have a first hand opportunity to see what they can't see," says owner of Falls Driving School, Bob Blaney.
