Former Employees Buy Historic Holyoke Printing Plant

By Matt DeLucia

Matt Riel is among more than a dozen who are happy to be working the presses again.

"It was great. It was like a family reuniting," he said.

Two months ago, he and nearly 45 other workers at Mansir Holden Printing in Holyoke lost their jobs to a struggling economy with rising costs.

"We were all kind of upset, but not totally surprised of the possibility of closing, but we also knew that the possibility of a re-opening was better than 50-50," said Joe Tropp, a sales employee at the new Mansir Printing company.

A possibility that became a reality when three former Mansir workers banded together to reopen the Holyoke plant. Starting early Friday, the presses were again turning out glossy brochures.

"It means everything... To put the people back from unemployment," said Doug Riel, one of the new co-owners of Mansir Printing. "Some people had jobs and as soon as they heard we were going to put this together. They told us that if we would re-open, they would love to come back to the company."

Mansir Holden started printing in the famous paper city back in 1903. Now that it is reopened... The new owners are bringing back the old blood that made the company thrive.

"I'm excited," said Matt Riel, a printing worker at the plant. "Most of the same guys came back. It's great to work with them again."

Currently, 15 of Mansir's former workers are back on the job, and the new owners say there are dozens more to come.
