Mayor Sarno Reflects on 100 Days in Office

By Lesley Tanner

It's been more than three months since Domenic Sarno took office as Mayor of Springfield, and he's taking a look back at his accomplishments so far.

On the eve of his one hundredth day in office Mayor Domenic Sarno says his focus hasn't changed since the campaign trail.

"Public safety, front number one, and the root cause public education," says Mayor Sarno. "If you continue to redefine those two fronts you will redefine the city of Springfield."

Mayor Sarno attributes much of the city's redefined safety to new leadership under Police Commissioner William Fitchet, and an increased focus on resident complaints through the department's newly formed Ordinance Squad.

"Quality of life issues we're putting on the wayside and focusing on 911 dispatch calls," says Mayor Sarno. "A lot of times when you let those things go they fester."

With new leadership at the police department Mayor Sarno says the school system will benefit also from new leadership. The Finance Control Board continues its search for a new superintendent. Someone who can continue the progress made by the school committee. The same committee who voted in favor of a new uniform policy the Mayor says will redefine Springfield's students.

"I think it's going to bring a heightened sense of self-respect, discipline and order," says Mayor Sarno.

A feeling he says can spread throughout the city if the residents are willing to help.

"It takes you. And I need to know when something is wrong, because we're gonna try to fix it," says Mayor Sarno. "And when something is good give yourself a pat on the back, but we need to start believing in our city of Springfield."
