Street Reopens After Tanker Accident

By CBS 3 Springfield News

Officials have reopened Center Street after completing the cleanup from the tanker accident that occurred Friday. Center Street is located below the highway overpass where the the accident took place.

Officials said none of the 9,500 gallons of gasoline or 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into the Connecticut river. Chicopee Mayor Michael Bissonnette said the quick efforts are proof that Western Massachusetts is prepared for major emergencies.

“It was a team effort and boy, oh boy, people should be very, very grateful. They got the job done yesterday,” said Bissonette.

Crews on the scene said while most of that fuel burned up in the explosion, a small amount was recovered and removed from the actual tanker.
