Northampton Police Send Out Warning to Women

By Liz Tufts

Northampton Police believe the same man may be responsible for assaulting a Smith College student, and exposing himself to a jogger in the area.

The first assault happened at around 8:30 Tuesday night. According to police, a Smith College Student was assaulted by a man near Paradise Road. Less than a half hour later, another woman told police she was jogging on Elm Street when she saw a man staring at her and exposing himself while sitting in a parked car.

Those who go to school and live in the area can't believe something like that could happen in their neighborhood. "Because it's a wealthy neighborhood and there's not much crime that's reported," says Smith College Student Jessica Quiroz. "I've never had a problem and I have never felt unsafe at all, so I'm surprised," says Northampton resident Morey Phippen.

Neither woman involved in the incidents was injured and they are now assisting police with the investigation. They both gave descriptions of the men to police and both men were described as an African- American male, about 6-feet tall.

Police now believe they are looking for just one man. They are now urging everyone, especially women to be on the look out, and not to walk alone late at night. But some residents say despite the recent assaults, they still feel safe. "I could probably run faster than him, but I will think about it, but I still probably do my same routine," adds Phippen.
