Man Stabbed, Stumbles into Busy Road

By Lesley Tanner

A man is stabbed several times just off of State Street in Springfield. A pile of clothes and a lone boot are all that is left in the alley off of Hayden Avenue.

Police believe this is where a man was stabbed several times in broad daylight. Just after the attack the man stumbled the block to State Street, and knocked on the window of this truck, pleading for help.

"He said, 'Just give me a ride across the street,' and I said, 'I'll walk you across the street,' but he didn't think he could make it walking," says a witness, who didn't want to give his name.

The victim jumped into the truck bed, and two men he had never met drove him across the street to the Indian Motorcycle Building. His intention was to just get dropped off, but when the men noticed his wounds they knew they couldn't just let him go.

"He couldn't move and asked us to give him time, let him take a breath," says the witness. "But I said, 'Man you're bleeding, you need an ambulance.'"

The man was taken to the hospital with a punctured lung. He is in serious condition but is expected to survive. Thanks to the kindness of strangers.

"I was glad I could help somebody, if it was me I would want someone to help me."

Police gathered evidence at the scene but do not have a person of interest or a description of a possible suspect. If you have any information you are asked to call the Springfield Police Department at 413-787-6355
