Peter Pan Working To Bring One Dollar Bus Fares

By Lesley Tanner

Peter Pan and Greyhound are working together to bring the new Boltbus to the Northeast, and passengers who plan ahead will be able to travel to four major cities for less than a gallon of gas.

"Round trip, probably 40 or 50 dollars." That's what drivers like Christine Woodberry spend trying to get to New York City on their own.

"When you throw in gas, tolls and parking it makes no economic sense to drive, and people are looking for a bargain," says Peter Pan's Executive Vice President Bob Schwarz.

Boltbus will offer trips between Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. with fares starting at just one dollar.

"I think we're going to revolutionize the intercity bus service," says Schwarz.

The new Boltbuses will have larger seats, electronic ports and free Wi-Fi but some riders say they are skeptical of the one dollar price tag.

"I feel like is there a catch?" says Woodberry. "There must be."

And bus officials say there is, only passengers who plan ahead will get the benefit of the bargain basement fares.

"If you plan ahead and get your ticket on-line you'll get the low fare," says Schwarz. "If you don't plan ahead and you walk up to buy your ticket you'll pay the full fare."

A deal riders like Woodberry say they can get on board with.

"The bus for Peter Pan at certain stations you have to book in advance, and if I did that, got the benefit of knowing I had a seat and the dollar fare, of course, yea that would be fabulous."

The Boltbus will start running at the end of March, with expanded service in April. Officials say if the concept is successful in the bigger cities they plan to expand, and may eventually be able to offer the bargain buses to their customers here in Springfield.
