Pregnant Springfield Woman Jumps Out Window

A pregnant woman jumps out of a window in Springfield, allegedly to get away from her violent boyfriend, and similar acts of domestic violence have officials pledging to make a change.

"Domestic violence prevention had to be the number one priority in 2008, and it will be so," says Springfield Police Commissioner William Fitchet.

It's a pledge being made by men across the country. But just hours after Springfield's top law enforcement officials signed their names to the White Ribbon Pledge, another act of domestic violence took place in the city, this one against a mother and her unborn child.

"She was opening the door, she wanted to leave," says neighbor Jessica Rodriguez. "I heard him close the door and yell at her, 'Get back in.'"

Police arrested Jason Gonzales around 4 am. Neighbors in the Belmont Avenue apartment building say they heard fighting, and in a drastic attempt to get away, the pregnant victim jumped out of a second story window. Gonzalez allegedly locked himself inside their apartment and used an attic crawl space to hide drugs and a handgun.

"I heard them climbing on the roof and I thought they were gonna fall through," say Rodriguez.

It was the second incident of domestic violence in the city this week. Just one night earlier a woman showed up at Baystate Medical Center saying her boyfriend threatened her with a knife and dragged her down the stairs. In both events the women survived, but domestic violence councilors says that doesn't mean they should go unnoticed.

"There aren't minor incidents or issues when it comes to domestic violence," says Jackie Humphreys with Baystate's Family Advocacy Center.

Which is why officials say it can't be only Springfield's finest who pledge to take a stand.

"It is incumbent upon every single person in this community to speak out against domestic violence," says Humphreys.

She also suggests Springfield lawmakers look at a zero tolerance policy on crimes such as violating a restraining order.
