Members of 104th Fighter Wing Deployed

Some of Western Massachusetts most dedicated Air Guard members are taking flight in just a few days to go overseas for operation Iraqi Freedom.

"Today everybody is bringing all their equipment, we are making sure everything is correct, and everybody has what they are supposed to have," said Lt. Colonel Pete Green, 104th Fighter Wing.

The 29 members of the 104th Fighter Wing from Barnes Air National Guard Base are in final preparations for their deployment to the Middle East. They are part of a security force that provides ground defense for airbases. As they pack away their military gear, they also tuck away a piece of home with them. "I pack certain things so I can feel comfortable. Such as a comforter or a blanket I use at home, they help me feel more comfortable and civilian-ized," said Glendaennis Santos, Senior Airman from the 104th Fighter Wing.

It also helps that these members have tight bonds with each other. "We see each other everyday, we see each other in the community, in schools. Some of the men and women I have in my squad I've known for 27 years," said Lt. Colonel Green.

The Airmen will be deployed for about six months, along with 112 additional security forces members from throughout the United States.
