Habitat Humanity House Built By Students

By Miranda Grossman

Students at one Franklin County school are honing their construction skills, while helping their community.

"I'm working on putting hangers in the basement for drainage pipes," explained Markie Adamski, a student at Franklin County Technical School in Turners Falls.

The electrical, plumbing and carpentry classes at Franklin County Tech are building a house in Turners Falls. They're working hard for Habitat for Humanity. "It gives us a lot of experience, it's a good thing we are doing here," said Nathan Streeter, a student at the Tech School.

The partnership between the school and Habitat, benefits everyone. "It shows kids early on what its like to give back to the community. They are learning community service and learning skills at the same time," said Cindy Adams, who works at the school and is also on the board of the Pioneer Valley Habitat for Humanity.

Adams says the one thing they need now is a family. "We are in the process of looking for a family and searching for a family eligible for a home." Adams says they haven't built many homes in Franklin County, but she knows there are families in need.

Pioneer Valley Habitat for Humanity is looking for families to apply to become homeowners.
There will be an information session on January 6th, at 3pm, at the First Baptist Church Parish House, 116 Federal Street, in Greenfield.
