Lower Car Insurance Rates for Safe Drivers

Lower Car Insurance Rates for Safe Drivers

By Matthew Campbell

Competition is coming to Massachusetts' auto insurance market. For the first time in 30 years, the market will now set insurance rates. It could eventually bring big name insurers to the Bay State.

The new plan breaks down like this: If you're a good driver, get ready to save.

"I'm a 9 step and I try to be a very good driver all the time," says Springfield driver Anna Maria DeSousa.

According to the new proposals, starting next year, drivers like DeSousa will be able to shop around for the best rates. Cuts and incentives will go to the best drivers.

Take for instance Amica. They announced rates for their best drivers will decrease by 20 percent. Average drivers will see a 10 percent decrease.

This wasn't the first time the state experimented with this plan. Back in the 70s, it failed because accident-prone drivers saw their rates triple. This time around, no matter how bad of a driver you are, your increase will only be capped at 10 percent.

State Insurance Commissioner Nonnie Burns says based on initial filings, at least 1.2 out of the 4 million Massachusetts drivers will see at least a 10 percent cut. Western Mass drivers say it's been a long time coming.

"We have old cars. We don't even have new cars, so it would be wonderful to save money with everything going up," DeSousa says.

The Attorney General and the Insurance Commission are reviewing these proposals and drivers will be able to choose for themselves in January.
