Canoeist Dies on the Otis Reservoir

By Anne Ebeling

Crews from 10 agencies searched for nearly 9 hours, looking for a missing man whose canoe capsized on the Otis Reservoir. The other passenger, 47-year old Charles Frestachi, in the canoe swam to shore, but there was no sign of his companion,46-year old Marc Camporeale.

Otis Fire Chief Donald Rider said, "We started this yesterday afternoon at approximately five thirty and we went to approximately eleven o'clock last night. We had the state police on the scene and the environmental police officers and we said we'd continue it tomorrow morning when we had daylight."

Back on scene the next morning, divers suited up to search for Camporeale from New York City. It took crews until 11 o'clock that morning to recover his body. "When they recovered the body, it was at approximately the same area we were last night, but last night it was extremely dark and the water was a little cloudy," said Rider.

Candy Chaffee has lived near the reservoir for six years. "It's a surprise, actually. It's kind of scary because now you know it can happen," she said.

Chaffee said she's never felt it was dangerous, but the cold and wind could make for crazy conditions, "I don't think it's a good idea to be out there during this weather. It's extremely windy, especially in this kind of weather because it's a reservoir and it's so open."
