Even before the early settlers first began exploring an inhabiting New England, hurricanes have been impacting the region. This list is an attempt at completeness, however documentation is sometimes hard to come by for storms centuries old, and there's always questions about the true strength of a storm relative to the construction of the day, and/or about the tropical-vs-extratropical qualities of a storm. So, with that, here's the breakdown of over-land hurricanes in New England since the 'early days'.

New England Hurricanes Through History

1600s

A few early hurricanes, the strongest of which presumably was the "Great Colonial Hurricane" of 1635. Six hurricanes in all strike New England during the 1600s. Read more »

1700s

Hurricanes in the 1700s become a source of curiosity for the emerging thinkers-of-the-day that experience them. Storms that come up the coast toward New England pass by Ben Franklin, Samuel Phillips, Ezra Stile, and others who begin to look for patterns in the storms. Fourteen hurricanes are described. 1800s

The 1800s featured many storms that really weren't worth their salt, with notable exceptions being the 1815 storm, and the storms of 1869. In all, eleven hurricanes strike New England. Read more »

1900s

The advancement of technology has made Atlantic hurricanes much easier to track and no longer surprise (as in 1938). Likewise, storm strength is much easier to verify. Nine storms impacted New England as hurricanes in the 1900s. Read more »
