Stella Teehan's Story

Stella Teehan tells her story of the 1938 hurricane.

By Brandon Butcher

…I lived in Chicopee Falls on the other side of the bridge…and we lived on Taylor Street, off Sheridan Street…I was just out of high school…a year after I got out of high school…I remember the storm…watching the wind blow and the trees Stella Teehan talks about living in Chicopee Falls during the Hurricane of 1938fall…and then we found out that the bridge was washed away…the bridge that takes us over to the other side of town…so that was a bad thing…and we didn’t own a car…so in order to get over to the other side of the bridge…they started using row-boats…somebody that lives on the shore…if they had boats, they would bring the people back and forth…and that was the only way you could get across…if you had to go to the dentist, etc…and that was a handicap…If  I remember correctly…they built a wooden bridge to walk across…but if you had a car you had to go around.

We didn’t know the storm was coming…I remember being in the house…I don’t think anyone warned us about it…we just started seeing the wind blow in and I remember all of us just looking out the window, wondering what was happening. It was windy enough to uproot the trees…we were watching it happen…We were afraid the house was going to go. We weren’t worried about the flooding, because we lived up higher…But we saw the wind blowing and the trees swirling around, stuff blowing all over the place. You know how people’s things blow around in their yards…they had to get out and find it all. That was the first one…and the only one I ever saw of that storm. That was 70-years ago, huh…can’t believe it.

There was eight of us…and my father was the only one working…and he walked to work, we all walked everywhere. I lived in the same area, all my life…just move a street here or there…It was the first time I ever saw trees fall…everytime since when we have a storm…I don’t mind it as much…it would never get that bad again…I was just awestruck…
