Jennie Cena's Story

Jennie Cena tells her story.

By Brandon Butcher

I lived at 103 Bozereth Street, right near the Big E…West Springfield.

The hurricane came…they men were playing bocci…Us children were outside. Then they told us we had to go home, because there was a hurricane a’comin. We didn’t quite understand what it was…we were young, but they scared us into going home; I was small. That night, my sister burned herself on something…so my father had to go get some medicine for it…when he came back to the home he was as pale as a ghost. And my mother said to him, “Adolpho, why you look so pale”…he says we gotta get out of here quick..he says there’s a flood coming. Jennie Cena tells her story of living in West Springfield during the hurricaneHe says it’s coming across from the Big E…it’s coming over Memorial Avenue…so we packed what we could…we hopped in the car, and we headed off to my God-Mother’s house in Agawam…and we stayed there until it was time that we could come home. They took pictures of my father…they came in by the boat…he wanted to see how high the water got…the boat went right onto the window-sill…and he looked in to see how it was…and we got scared. We were so glad when it was over. We stayed in where we were supposed to … We obeyed our parents because we were scared. It was too scared to look out. It was after supper when we had to get out…we went to Agawam over the Agawam bridge. We stayed there about a week. We didn’t pack too much, my father was so scared we had to leave right away. It was a mess on the first floor…We had workers come in and sweep the floor and shovel the muck out…there was mud and everything around. The swirling water forced us to throw much out. We haven’t seen anything like that since…I think they fixed the dike after that. Thank God. That’s something you’ll never forget. My mother knew right away there was something wrong. Main Street…and the other side of town…I heard they got it a little worse than us. They worked hard to straighten things out.
