June Sadowski tells her story.

By Brandon Butcher

At the time, I lived In the south end of Springfield on Morris Street. Well, during the hurricane, I was over at my grandparents house on Williams Street and my mom was there. But she decided she was going to go home and the winds started picking up.

June Sadowski tells her storyWalking on the sidewalk, across the opposite side of the road where my grandparents lived. They lived on the opposite side of the street, we were out on the front porch. We were watching my mother on the street. She got past this big tree doing up toward Dale Street on Williams Street, and a big tree came down.  when the tree came down, my grandmother said, 'oh my God, Mindy got killed.' My grandfather ran up and saw my mother on the other side of the street, safe and sound. She kept going, cause she was trying to get to our house. I was at my grandparents. Yes, we were on the front porch watching my mother walk up the street when we saw the tree come down. It was a big tree, a big maple tree, if I can remember right. My grandparents were sure my mother was crushed by the tree. I thought my mother got killed. I started crying. I was old enough if my mother got dead, she wasn't going to come back to me. Fortunately she got just beyond the tree. I can remember the winds, but I was young, so I don't remember everything.

June Sadowski tells her story During the flood, again we were over at my grandparents house at Williams Street and my grandfather said, "gee, it's getting damp in here, I guess I'll start a fire." So he opened the cellar doorway, to get some wood, and when he opened the door, the wood came floating into the kitchen. Fortunately, we lived up on Morris Street, my family, my parents and I, just above an incline, so the flood came to the house next door, but never came to our house. I was young enough that I wasn't paying attention. I just knew there was wind and I remember my grandparents getting all excited when the tree came down. They were for sure my mother got crushed under it.

I don't remember any (damage) because we didn't wander around. My grandparents had to come to our house, and the flood came just to the next door to us. They had to put furniture on top of furniture just to keep dry. They were piling furniture on top of tables, the dining room table, the kitchen table. Like I say, I thought I lost my mother.
